Making a Counseling Request

Here are some suggestions on the type of information to include in a counseling request:

  1. Give a short description of the situation that's bothering you and what you want help with.
  2. Explain how you feel about this situation and the people involved.
  3. How do you feel about yourself? Allow feelings to free flow.
  4. Express all the self-judgments* you have in this situation.
  5. Express your frustration, anger, or any other emotion you can identify.
  6. Is there anything else affecting how you feel right now?
  7. Can you guess what the person (people) involved in this situation feels?
  8. What's your communication usually like with them?
  9. Tell me about any previous attempts to deal with this situation.
  10. What results do you want from your counseling?
  11. Is there a part of you you'd like to understand better or want to change?

One way of using these suggestions is to highlight the text above, copy it, and paste it into the text box of the Counseling Service you've selected. Then write your situation out under each numbered suggestion.

*Self-judgments are thoughts such as:

bulletI feel stupid/ugly/too short/hopeless/etc.
bulletNobody loves me/thinks I'm attractive/likes me/etc.
bulletI'm afraid I'll be rejected/not succeed/be a failure/etc.
bulletI'm selfish/controlling/weak/pushover/etc.

Changing Page Sizes in Your Browser

Many websites no longer allow you to change the size of the print. If the instructions below do not work, hold down the Control button the same time you press on the "+" sign to make the print appear larger. To make the print smaller, hold down the Control button the same time you press on the "-" sign. Repeat as necessary.

To change the size of the print of the internet pages you're viewing:

From Netscape:

  1. Select View from the menu bar at the top of the page.
  2. Click on Increase Font (or Decrease Font if the page appears too big).
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 if needed.

From Internet Explorer:

  1. Select View from the menu bar at the top of the page.
  2. Select Text Size.
  3. Choose Largest, Larger, Medium, Smaller, or Smallest and click on your choice.

The internet pages you're viewing will resize so the print appears larger (or smaller).

Updating Your Internet Browser

The internet is becoming more complex all the time. Many sites now include pages that require the latest browsers to view them.

If you have an older internet browser on your computer, we recommend you update it through one of the links below. As part of our commitment to you, we offer our paying customers free support for updating your browser.

Microsoft Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer  - Use Microsoft's free download to update your web browser.

Firefox - This web browser from Mozilla is now faster, even more secure, and totally customizable.

If you continue to have problems please contact us at info@onlinecounseling.org

How do I create an anonymous email account?

Using your regular email account generally shows your name and possibly your workplace if you use your work email address. By creating an email account in a free service like Yahoo or Hotmail, you can create and alias and the emails can only be seen by accessing your account with a private id and password.

If you are not comfortable with accessing even your free account from home or work, there are many places that offer internet access, including public libraries (free), community centers, schools, coffee houses, or internet/cyber cafes. Ask around in your community and you may find more options.

Use one of these links to set up a free account at Yahoo or Hotmail.
